We met Richie Taylor at a powwow in Georgia in 2005, where he was demonstrating the process of tanning hides in the traditional way. He teachs classes on tanning, and his partner demonstrates stone cooking skills. We asked Richie to save every hide he tanned throughout the year. In 2006, this talented man sold us six elk rawhides. We recently purchased three more elk hides.
Richie does not damage Mother Earth with chemicals. These hides are not run through huge machines. They are traditional. These elk were honored and so the drums are made in a very good way. The new elk hide drums have a very distinctive sound, and they have tremendous character, with tiny elk hairs still clinging to the beautiful brown hides.
